With a background in both motoring journalism and automotive PR, new recruit, Henry Willis brings technical experience and communications expertise to Torque’s diverse range of clients.

As we get to know Henry, we’ve asked him a few questions to get settled…

Tell us about your background

I began my writing career at a classic car magazine. The string of classic cars and motorbikes I’ve owned give me a deep-rooted passion for everything with an engine and wheels. I also spent a couple of years writing for Auto Express, where I oversaw the smooth running of the products and accessories section. My first foray into automotive PR came in 2015 when I joined an automotive-specialist communications agency, before joining Torque at the start of this year.

What excites you about the automotive industry?

There’s never been a more exciting time to be involved. In the coming years, vehicle manufacturers are advancing and developing more plug-in electric powertrain options, while autonomous technology is always in the spotlight.

And what about the automotive PR sector in particular?

It’s up to the PR industry to make the changes in the automotive sector clear to consumers. The work we have to do in public relations is reflective of the exciting forthcoming changes expected in the automotive industry.

What do you enjoy the most about working in PR?

Working with Torque’s enviable list of clients allows for unique access and first sight of new cars and products that – in my previous life as a journalist – I wouldn’t see until I was reviewing a car on a test drive. Within my contacts book, inclusive of both clients and journalists, is a long list of friends I’ve made in the automotive industry, and I’m lucky to speak to and work with them as much as I do.

What do you do for fun, outside of work?

I could happily lock myself away to tinker with motorbike engines until the end of time. In addition to maintaining my car and motorbike collection, I compete in long-distance running races across the country, ride for a cycling club and enjoy going to gigs.
