Category winners have been announced for the UK Car of the Year Awards, which highlights the best new cars on sale for UK motorists. The independent awards saw 12 cars from 11 different manufacturers shortlisted by a judging panel of 29 leading motoring journalists. The triumphant model in each category will now battle it out for the title of UK Car of the Year 2019, which will be announced on 1st March 2019.

Volvo is the current holder of the UK Car of the Year title from 2018 with the XC60, and has already picked up two accolades at this year’s awards, with its XC40 awarded Best Small Hatch and V60 named Best Estate. New manufacturers on the list of category winners included Suzuki, with the Jimny voted Best 4×4, and Bentley with its Continental GT selected as Best Coupé. In addition, Alpine – making its debut in the UKCOTY Awards this year – claimed Best Performance prize with the A110. At the other end of the spectrum, Volkswagen picked up the honour of Best Supermini for the Polo.

The Skoda Karoq took the top spot in the Best Family Car category by a single vote. While another close call came in the MPV sector, new for 2019, where the Peugeot Rifter came out victorious.

Previous category winners saw success at this year’s UK Car of the Year Awards. With the Ford Fiesta ST, former Best Performance Car, voted Best Hot Hatch. Mazda retained the Best Cabriolet accolade with its higher-powered MX-5, which was introduced to the market in 2018.

Rolls-Royce’s Cullinan saw the Goodwood-based manufacturer retain the Best Luxury crown, which it has held since 2017. The fourth win in six years for Rolls-Royce in the luxury category. Completing the list of winners, Jaguar’s all-electric I-Pace was voted Best Executive car.
