What is social media? And does my business need to be on it?

Do you ever feel like you’re in the dark when it comes to social media? Don’t worry. You’re not the first. And you definitely won’t be the last.

In fact, the feeling is so normal, it’s a common enquiry from prospective clients. ‘Why does my business need to be on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc?’

And the answer often is ‘it doesn’t.’ (Gasp!) ‘But it does need to be on LinkedIn…’

Because social media is about more than being seen on Facebook or one of the other big platforms.

It’s about introducing your brand messaging and benefits to your customer, by communicating and interacting with them in an engaging way.

And then it’s about reminding your customers about those very same brand messages and benefits day after day.

Social media for business is a way of sharing information and knowledge about your company and its ethos, by way of an ongoing conversation with your clients, prospects and other stakeholders.

And there are numerous channels you can use to have that exchange.

As a rule, if you’re a business selling direct to the consumer, Facebook and Instagram are most likely the best platforms to reach your target audience.

But if you’re a B2B business, then LinkedIn is probably the place for you.

These channels make it easy for you, and in turn your customers, to spread the word about your products, services, ideas, events, news, team, – you name it.

But how?

The process is pretty simple.

  1. Write some short, snappy content suitable for your audience
  2. Combine it with an appealing image, video, graphic or web link
  3. Publish it on your preferred platform

And there you have it!

A job well done will reward your business with ‘likes’, ‘comments’, ‘shares’ and page followers. And before you know it, your brand is out there, in front of a captive audience conditioned to react to your post.

Engagement with these bite-sized pieces of information raises awareness of who you are and what you do. It builds trust in your brand. It allows you to understand how your audience feels about your business. And perhaps most importantly, it drives traffic to your website and generates new customers and new income.

And according to Statista, 53 million people (as of January 2021) in the UK alone are active social media users. With that number forecast to increase by next year. That’s a lot of potential new customers.
